June 2004 - LAW COMPANY SCOOPS CHARITY AWARD

A law company has been honoured with a charity award for its commitment to helping the unemployed get back to work.

Employment charity Tomorrow’s People awarded Sprecher Grier Halberstam, a commercial law firm, with its London Employer of The Year Award for 2004, at a ceremony at London’s Two Temple Place.

Partner David Sprecher received the Tomorrow's People award

The company has, in the past, been more than happy to recruit from Tomorrow’s People clients and has helped others by providing work placements. It also passes its job vacancies to Tomorrow’s People before advertising them, ensuring the long-term unemployed have an even better chance of finding and keeping work.

Sprecher Grier Halberstam was nominated for the award by Tomorrow’s People Employer Adviser, Louise Wallington. She said: “Sprecher Grier Halberstam got in touch with us because they believe in exactly what Tomorrow’s People is trying to do – help unemployed people find and retain work to enable them to build a positive future. The company wanted to fill a vacancy and one of our clients was successfully recruited.

“Since then Sprecher Grier Halberstam has made regular contact with appropriate staff vacancies and work placements. The company recognises that Tomorrow’s People clients face many barriers to employment and that it is not an easy transition when they first start a job. They have supported existing clients and always returned to us for prospective employees. They understand the importance of giving opportunities to people who would normally find it difficult to break into the labour market.

“Sprecher Grier Halberstam has also shown its wider commitment to Tomorrow’s People, helping with the charity’s legal advice, providing premises for Tomorrow’s People events and meetings, and actively contributing development ideas and practical help to progress these.

“The relationship has brought benefits for all parties involved: Sprecher Grier Halberstam has benefited from Tomorrow’s People by having the opportunity to recruit the right staff without having to advertise or pay recruitment fees, Tomorrow’s People has benefited from the organisation’s support and advice and our clients have benefited by gaining valuable experience, enhancing their skills and obtaining permanent employment.

“Sprecher Grier Halberstam is a good example of an employer who gives real opportunities to people struggling to find a place in the labour market and they really deserve this award.”

David Sprecher, Senior Partner at Sprecher Grier Halberstam, said: “We have been delighted to have the opportunity to give people a chance of employment and to train them in the disciplines of the work place. Tomorrow’s People does an incredible job, helping the unemployed to have the confidence and skills to not just find, but also keep a job. We are delighted to support what Tomorrow’s People does and to accept the award.”

To celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, Tomorrow’s People is holding Awards for Achievement ceremonies across the country to honour people who have found jobs against the odds and employers and partners who have gone the extra mile in helping people back to work.

Now that Sprecher Grier Halberstam has won the London Employer of the Year award, it will be nominated as the national Employer of the Year alongside other nominees from the South West, the South East, and the North, which will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Guildhall in September.

Tomorrow’s People is a national charitable trust which has a 20-year track record of success in helping people out of long-term unemployment, welfare dependence or homelessness, into jobs and self-sufficiency.

The trust has helped change the lives of more than 380,000 people who had been resigned to long-term, even life-long, unemployment, since it was established in 1984. On average, 76% of people helped by Tomorrow’s People are still in employment 12 months on.
